About the location

The Watsons Bay area provided abundant fish, shellfish, and food for the local Aboriginal community in a sheltered environment. Rock engravings in the area depict a range of marine creatures including whales and fish. There is also a rock shelter at the northern end of Camp Cove Beach that shows evidence of habitation by the local Aboriginal people.

Hornby Lighthouse stands tall at South Head, near Watsons Bay in Sydney Harbour National Park. The iconic red and white striped tower is surrounded by magnificent views: Sydney Harbour to the west, Middle Head and North Head to the north, and the expansive Pacific Ocean to the east. It’s a great spot for whale watching in winter.

The lighthouse was built in 1858 and was the third lighthouse to be built in NSW.

We will walk along the South Head Heritage trail â€“ This is an easy walk and takes us along a cobbled stone pathway, past an (disarmed) historic canon. We pass a cute little harbour beach and the historic residence of the Lighthouse keepers, before reaching Hornby Lighthouse.

Time: 2.5 hours.
We will meet about half an hour before sunrise.
